Characteristics of Craft Items

Objects / Decoration

Growing up surrounded by Korea’s natural landscapes, the artist was instinctively drawn to the profound resonance of mountains and the tactile allure of clay. As a child, he often gazed at the mountains, lost in thought, and over time, his deep connection with earth and nature naturally led him to immerse himself in ceramic art. This process became the foundation of his creative world, shaping his artistic philosophy.

His signature series, ‘Sansuhwa (Landscape Painting) Series,’ captures the serene silhouettes of mist-covered mountains at dawn through minimalist, monochromatic ceramic forms. While traditional shapes serve as a base, he builds upon them, layering ‘his own time’ into each piece. Though his works primarily feature monotones and natural clay hues, he occasionally incorporates soft pinks and greens to express the diverse beauty of nature.

Using high-quality clay, his works are fired through oxidation firing at 1,220°C (cone 6), 1,239°C (cone 7), and 1,250°C (cone 8), depending on the material properties and intended function of each piece. Every work is meticulously hand-built using the coiling technique, resulting in precisely sculpted, fluid forms.

At the heart of his creative process is the pursuit of balance between fullness and emptiness, achieved through a deep state of flow. His artistic philosophy is heavily influenced by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow Theory, emphasizing meditative repetition and technical mastery as a path to artistic transcendence.

Through this introspective and time-intensive process, his works become vessels of accumulated time and inner landscapes, offering him a sense of pure joy. By integrating the stories of earth and mountains into ceramics, he expresses his artistic vision through a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary aesthetics, bringing his philosophy to life in a tangible and sensory form.
